Chobe National Park

Safari in Chobe National Park in northern Botswana is a sensible option for travelers wishing to combine Victoria Falls holidays with a safari to one of the best wildlife areas of Southern Africa. Chobe is a mere 90 minute drive from Victoria Falls, which in turn is easily accessible by air from Johannesburg - the main entry point into the region.  Chobe also makes the ideal safaris destination to Okavango Delta in Botswana, the magnificent labyrinth of waterways in the Kalahari Desert.  Together, these two safari regions present the ultimate experience for travelers looking for a rich and rewarding wildlife experience. Chobe has the largest concentration of elephant in the world, attracted by the fertile riverine forests along the Chobe River and the open savannah grasslands of the interior.

Luxury lodges & safari camps in Chobe are positioned along the river and are easily accessible by road from the main entry point of Kasane. The more remote lodges and safari camps - particularly in the Savute area - winch is famous for the lion prides which prey on elephant - are best accessed by air charter from Kasane. A usual day on safari in Chobe or Savute starts with a game drive at sunrise, followed by a hearty breakfast in camp. There is often also the option of a walking safari. There is a siesta after lunch, a late afternoon game drive on open tour 4x4 vehicles or a sunset cruise along the river. Most camps are fully inclusive of all meals and local beverages.

The Chobe National Park is located in the northeast corner of Botswana. This park is the second largest in Botswana (11,700 sq km) and named after the river Chobe which forms the northern boundary of the park.  Chobe is only a short 90 minute drive from Victoria Falls. Chobe is probably most well known for its large herds of African Elephants. The Chobe River supports the largest concentration of elephant found anywhere in Africa (over 70,000) and it is not uncommon to encounter herds in excess of a hundred. The Chobe Riverhas its origins in Angola, where it is known as the Kuando River. When it enters Botswana, the Kuando River becomes the Linyanti and then near Ngoma Gate it becomes the Chobe. The Chobe River meets up with the Zambezi River near Kazangula at the border of Botswana. Chobe National Park can be divided into two distinct areas. The Chobe Region around Kasane is where some of Botswana’s most popular safari lodges can be found (Chobe Game Lodge and Chobe Safari Lodge for example). Kasane is the main arrival town for visitors exploring northern Botswana, as it has an airport and good road network. Upstream and west of Kasane is the Linyanti Region and Savuti Region. Remote and accessible by light aircraft, this area is quieter and more secluded and is well known for its plentiful general wildlife and abundant numbers of predators. The Chobe area is mostly visited in combination with the Okavango Delta and Linyanti Area. An added advantage of visiting Chobe is that Zimbabweand Zambiaare neighbouring countries and with the main attraction of Victoria Falls, which lies just over the northern border with Botswana, you can add this stopover to your itinerary with minimal fuss.
