If you are a competent rider and have always yearned to go on a safari but been put off by the thought of viewing lions from a vehicle, then African Horseback Safaris is the answer to your prayers. Based at a rustic tented camp on the western side of the Okavango Delta, this operation organizes African riding packages across some of the most scenically varied and game-rich areas in the world. Their well-mannered and bush-wise horses enable you to approach the game at close range but in complete safety.

Groups of up to eight ride out for between four and six hours a day, with the option of day rides and overnight stays at a mobile fly camp. The riding is varied, sometimes quietly stalking big game, at other times galloping alongside plains game, such as giraffe, zebra and wildebeest.

Start the day cantering through shallow flood plains stopping for a champagne breakfast, then return to camp tired but exhilarated for a leisurely swim. Sundowners can be enjoyed in the large furnished mess tent before a three course candlelit dinner. After all that activity, you will be ready for a comfortable night’s sleep in your large, walk-in, twin bedded tent, with ensuite toilet and shower.
