Geography: Serowe is situated in eastern Botswana and is about 250km north of the capital city of Gabarone.
History: Serowe is the country's largest village and has a population of around 90,000. Its history is tied up with the Ngwato people, and has been their main village since King Khama moved here in 1902.
Arts and Culture: Visitors to Serowe can get acquainted with the culture and history of the Khama family, the chiefs of the Ngwato people, at the Khama III Memorial Museum. The building that the museum is housed in was donated by Leapeetswe Khama, and visitors can see exhibits including the personal effects of King Khama III and his descendants, as well as artefacts illustrating the history of Serowe. Also of interest is the natural history display, with its large collection of African insects and snakes of the region.
Science and Nature: The Khama Rhino Sanctuary, about 20km northwest of Serowe, is an area dedicated to the conservation of the animal and is home to seven of Botswana's sixteen remaining rhino.
