Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha Kenya is a beautiful freshwater lake surrounded by a number of hills that harbor a multitude of Wildlife and without any known outlet – a prerequisite for a freshwater lake. Meaning "Rough Water", it was christened by the British fromword Naiposha, which means the waves occasionally made by the afternoon wind across the lake Naivasha. At 1880 meters above sea level it is the highest among Rift valley Lakes. At 85km North West of Kenya’s capital Nairobi Lake Naivasha is just over an hours drive by public or Private Transport, including Charter Flights.

The lake is located some distance from the Naivasha town and taxis are readily available. For overnight travelers, there are well-furnished Self catering cottages, lodges, Motels, Camping sites, Resorts and hotels such as Cray Fish Camp Site, Lake Naivasha Simba Lodge, Lake Naivasha Sopa Lodge, and Fish Eagle Hotel among others. The Yellow barked Acacia that abound with bird life make Naivasha a world class birding holiday destination thus a haven for Bird Lovers and Researchers. A great way to spend a morning or afternoon is taking a boat tours around the lake encountering local fishermen, Columbus Monkeys calling from the tree tops, Wallowing Buffaloes from the swamps, Wandering Giraffes among the acacia, and a population of Hippos sleeping the day out in the shallows of lake Naivasha.

Splendid scenery around the lake naivasha is the privately owned Crater Lake Game Sanctuary situated on the former estate of Lady Diana Delamere, which is home to Ox- Wagon Safaris. "Elsamere" a Wildlife Education and Conservation Centre was once home to Joy Adamson, author of Born free. Walking, hiking, biking and rock climbing is ideal in Hell's Gate National Park named for its pair of massive Red Tinged Cliffs framing a Geothermically active interior of steam vents and bubbling springs. The lovely lake with its cool climate is a noble retreat for any Resident or Tourist looking for peace and a relaxing environment. The haunting call of a Fish Eagle high over the lake brings a perfect daybreak making the sunsets very stunning.

Lake Naivasha is a popular vacation weekend getaway for weary city dwellers. It was once part of a bigger lake that included Lakes Elmenteita and Nakuru, but much of this original body of water dried up, leaving Lake Naivasha with a 150 km2 freshwater lake. Subsequently, Lake Naivasha has become known for its cool climate, peaceful surrounds and tranquil waters – an excellent holidaying spot. During the colonial era of the early 20th century, the lakeshore was a popular location for parties.

Today, the fertile soil around the lake is used for agriculture, in particular for the production of fruit, flowers, vegetables and vineyards, while the fish of the lake attract over 400 bird species. Wild animals that can be seen frequenting the shore are zebra, antelope, giraffes, monkeys and hippopotami. Between 1937 and 1950 this beautiful, peaceful fresh water lake was used as a landing place for plane passengers destined for Nairobi! The flying boat from London would land on the lake where the Lake Naivasha Country Club now stands, and travellers would board a bus for Nairobi. Today the lovely lake, with its cool climate, has become a retreat for Nairobi residents and tourists looking for peace. Over 400 birds have been recorded on the lake and it supports a large number of hippo. Despite conservation efforts however, the ecological balance has been tipped by the introduction of sport fish, including the Nile perch, the North American red swamp crayfish and various aquatic plants.

Much of the lake is surrounded by forests of the yellow barked Acacia Xanthophlea, known as the yellow fever tree. These forests abound with bird life, and Naivasha is known as a world class birding destination. The region surrounding the Lake is well worth exploring. There are two smaller lakes nearby, Oloidien, and Sonachi, a bright green cater lake. Boat trips on the lake are widely available, and are a great way to spend an afternoon or morning. Sunsets are always stunning, with the haunting call of a Fish Eagle high over the Lake bringing the day to a perfect end....
