As the custodian of an important swath of African wilderness, Crater Lake camp strives to uphold the highest social and environmental standards. The Camp employs its staff from neighboring communities, and leases part of its game sanctuary for sustainable woodlots. A dedicated team of rangers working in close cooperation with the Kenya Wildlife Service strictly monitors the sanctuary itself. The camp recently established its own community development trust, the Crater Lake Action Network (CLAN), which is raising funds to fence the sanctuary as part of the wildlife corridor around Lake Naivasha.
The Crater Camp is built on the shores of green volcanic lake in the bottom of an old volcanic crater. The Crater is 87 hectares in extent and the lake takes up 14 hectares of this area, rated the 'Best Tented Camp' in Kenya and 'Best Weekend Getaway', the Crater Lake Lodge has also gained the reputation of being among the most romantic camps in Kenya. It is an exciting two hours drive from the capital city -Nairobi. The Crater Lake Lodge fits easily into this natural paradise in keeping with its owner's conservation ethic, the ten tented bandas have been built entirely from their environs, with pillars and stairways of finely-carved acacia set on foundations inlaid with chunks of glinting obsidian. Crater Lake camp Naivasha's each tent occupies its own clearing, with secluded veranda offering spectacular views across the lake.
The tents are a picture of rustic sophistication, with elegant four-poster beds and reproduction furniture combined with modern ensuite bathrooms in a charming, comfortable blend of old and new. Five of the tents at Crater Lake Camp have single beds, five doubles; two are solid bandas', with bunk-beds available for children. No noise - just the twittering of birds and the sound of the acacias blowing in the African wind. At Crater Lake camp you are at peace with nature. The alkaline lake changes from blue to emerald green and back again with each passing hour, and is the nesting place for a myriad of birds, the fish eagles, busy weavers, cheeky robin chats, ibis, kite, ducks, sunbirds, fire finches, and the tiny and colourful cordon bleu. During the day, or game drives at night: You could see giraffe, eland, bush buck, jackal, baboon, Columbus and velvet monkeys, hyena, warthog, hippos, dik dik, kongoni, duiker, serval, aadvark, badger or even leopard. Escorted walk safaris and nature walks around the crater or across the plains on to Lake Naivasha are popular. Sundowners at Leopard Rock overlooking The Crater Lake and the camp beyond are very popular.
Lake Naivasha is the second largest and the highest lake of the Central Rift Valley lakes. Remain of a great lake which spread through the basins and spilling out at its southern end through the Ol Njorowa Gorge (Hell's Gate National Park), this freshwater lake has kept much of its old colonial charm and is also the centre of a prosperous flower export business. How To Get To Crater Lake Lodge
From Nairobi, there are two roads going to Naivasha : one going down alongside the escarpment, and one going up towards Naivasha town. The "truck" road going down the escarpment is shorter in distance but after Maai Mahiu town (first town down the hill), there are huge potholes on the road going towards Naivasha Lake. The other road, the A104 uplands, is longer in distance but in very good state as it is not used by container truck.
