Rusinga Island Lodge

Rusinga Island Lodge Hotel, located in Rusinga Island, Kenya combines ancient mystery with modern adventure in one of Kenya's most exciting and unexpected safari destinations. Set in the sparkling waters of the world's second largest freshwater lake, Rusinga first made its name in 1948, when Dr Mary Leakey unearthed the remains of proconsul Africanus, who roamed these shores 17 million years ago with boars, the size of rhinoceroses. Today, this is a far more peaceful place, with eight charming cottages encircling a pristine lawn on the gently sloping lakeshore. The club is famous for its superb fishing, for which it holds four world records - including the all-tackle record for a 208-pound Nile perc.

Rusinga Island Hotel exudes an atmosphere of serene tranquility. The manicured velvet lawns stretch to the water's edge and the grounds, with its exotic trees are a haven for a myriad of bird species - many of which are unique to this area of Kenya. The Lodge's renowned hospitality, delicious home-grown, home cooked food and indulgent accommodation combine to offer an ideal home from which to explore other areas of East Africa.

Rusinga's Island Lodge spacious grounds offer a safe environment for children to release their energy, the more active to catch up on their exercise. For those wishing to relax, a halcyon oasis in which to unwind and take respite. The Lodge's newly opened Spa offers a range of luxurious treatments, whilst on the lake guests may enjoy invigorating water sports such as water skiing and doughnutting. For the keen fisherman, the shallow waters of Lake Victoria are home to legendary Nile Perch growing up to 300lbs and even the most reluctant fisherman can reap gratification casting off the jetty for abundant tilapia.

Rusinga Island Lodge is a place of quiet and beauty to calm the mind and rejuvenate the body. Rusinga Island Lodge with its luxurious accommodation is a great place to relax before, during or at the end of a rigorous and exciting East African Safari.
Rusinga is owned and managed by the Roberts family. The atmosphere is informal and relaxed; the Lodge is proud of its reputation for excellent meals.

Rusinga Island Lodge Restaurant
Part of Rusinga Island Lodge's unique charm lies in its gracious hospitality, personalized service and fine cuisine. Each guest's stay is tailored specifically to their individual needs, with breakfast and lunch served al fresco on the lawns overlooking Lake Victoria. Sumptuous dinners are served in Fish Eagle house or candlelit on the jetty or by the pool.
Everything possible is home grown and no artificial fertilizers or chemicals are used. The fruit and vegetables are collected fresh each day. The Rusinga Island Lodge team takes great pride in the food served and all breads, pastries and cakes are homemade.

The specialty is fish dishes as both Tilapia and Nile perch are plentiful and make delicious eating in many different ways - whole grilled over coals, smoked or Zanzibar-style with coconut, lime and coriander, to name a few favorites. Breakfast and lunch are usually served under sweeping fig trees in the garden whilst dinners are taken either in the dining area, by the floodlit pool or on the jetty.

Rusinga Island Lodge Activities
Boat Trips - to Bird Islands where thousands of water birds roost. Giant monitor lizards and spotted-necked otters are often seen on the rocks around the island. Magnificent fish eagles soar overhead and swoop down low giving excellent photographic opportunities. The friendly Luo community fish along the shores in their colourful canoes and sailing dhows. The lodge's guests are welcome to visit their villages where the night's catch is set out to dry in the sun and larger fish are smoked.

Bird Watching - Life a the Lodge revolves around the lake and the island's birds - from stately Fish Eagles to tiny iridescent sunbirds and arrow-fast kingfishers, to name but a few of the 369 species of local and migratory birds, including several that only occur in Western Kenya. Many birds including fish eagles and the colourful double toothed barbet nest in the grounds.

Ruma National Park Visit: Ruma National Park is one of Kenya's most unusual and beautiful national parks. The last surviving groups of roan antelope in Kenya can be seen here - a large antelope with magnificent black and white facial markings and swept-back horns. Other special animals include the Jackson’s Hartebeest and Rothschild giraffe. Also seen in abundance are oribi, bohor reedbuck, impala, topi, waterbuck and buffalo. Leopards may also be sighted. Due to the remoteness of the park, it is unlikely that guests from Rusinga Island Lodge will see another visitor. A bush breakfast in Ruma is something very special.
Family Activities - Equipment is available for all age groups for water-skiing, mono-skiing, knee-boarding, tubing and mountain biking. There are many walks available around the island or, for the more adventurous, take a short boat ride to Mfangano Island and then hike uphill to explore ancient rock art.
Water Sports - Modern equipment is available for all age groups for water-skiing and ‘donuting'.

Spa - The lodge's Spa offers a range of treatments including aromatherapy massage, reflexology, manicure, pedicure, Indian head massage.
Water sports - Feel free to use the 16 ft Hobie Cat or one of the two windsurfers. Modern water sports equipment is available for all age groups.
Safaris - Only 40 minutes by air from the Masai Mara, Rusinga is the perfect place to relax in warm and informal surroundings before or after your safari!
