Set in milkwood forest and encircled by beautiful silver beaches and pristine coral reefs on the protected north-west side of Benguarra Island, which was declared a National Park in the 1970s, the lodge feels more like a bush camp rather than beach hotel. The forest and wetland eco-systems sustain a diverse population of fauna, flora and wildlife at this idyllic island getaway.

Just 26 guests stay in secluded double roomed East-African-cum-Arabic style chalets built on stilts, each with a private view for enjoying magnificent sunsets and abundant bird-life. There's also an exclusive, private villa for families or honeymooners.

This is not only a great place for birding; there is fishing for fighting marlin and other game fish to be had in the Mozambican Channel and the Lodge has a fully equipped professional team to take you into the deep, even if you have never fished before. Saltwater fly fishing is also available from the Lodge's customised boat. In addition, there is a fully equipped dive centre to take you to breathtakingly unspoilt reefs, not to mention a stunning swimming pool for the less adventurous.

Talking of seafood, there's fresh fish, crab and calamari with a Portuguese twist to enjoy in the excellent, relaxed restaurant. Picnics are also a speciality of Benguerra Lodge. This is barefoot luxury with a conscience.
