Because the grading system is market driven and voluntary it stimulates improvement throughout all levels of service offering. This process continuously encourages the industry to re-invent, revalue and grow itself. In doing so it provides another key in the overall development and transformation of tourism in South Africa.Whilst the stars awarded are an important recognition of an establishments quality, what is perhaps of more importance, is an understanding of the philosophy of a shared responsibility and the end benefit this brings to the customer.

Not all establishments in the Eastern Cape are star graded and this does not necessarily mean that they offer a bad service or experience.  The grading process is a voluntary one.  We as the Eastern Cape Tourism Board will continue to encourage our tourism service providers to grade where possible. Other recognized memberships, awards or endorsements to look out for within the industry are:  SATSA, AA, Portfolio Collection, Fair Trade in Tourism, ETEYA and others.  Local Tourism Bureaus have membership listings which can assist you in making the correct choice.
