Arts and Culture: The Kouga region is said to be one of the earliest places where modern man roamed and the earliest records of Homo Sapiens are to be found at the Klasies River Cave, a few kilometres west of the Tsitsikamma River mouth. These 120,000-year old remains are twice as old as Neanderthal man remains found in Europe.
Science and Nature: Tucked away between two capes and two protected bays, Cape St Francis has a 16km stretch of pristine beach that features an open estuary. This excellent eco-destination has rivers to explore and glorious sandy beaches to play on. Visitors to the Cape St Francis Nature Reserve can enjoy a walk along the beach to Shark Point, off which lies the shipwreck of the "Genesis".
Entertainment: The harbour resort village of St Francis Bay is home to the dynamic Harbour Square and has open markets, speciality shops, pubs and restaurants. Within the square is the Yacht Club with its authentic working harbour. There are many hiking and coastal trails in the area. Visitors can enjoy an hour long Sundowner Cruise around the St Francis Bay Marina, while excursions to the Lighthouse depart daily from the Canal Harbour.
Sport: Outdoor sport enthusiasts will find the mountain biking and hiking trails challenging, while anybody interested in board sports can go for surf lessons, or attempt sand boarding!
