Hotel Dik Dik was founded in 1990 by the same Swiss family that still owns and manages it today. It lies about 20 kilometers from Arusha, near the village of Usa River, about 1 kilometer along a cornfield-lined dirt road leading north from the main road to Moshi, Arusha National Park and Kilimanjaro International Airport and is one of the oldest hotels in Arusha .
Reception is at the entrance of the spacious main building, which has parquet floors, a high beamed thatched roof supported by pillars, white plaster walls and a brick fireplace. The restaurant is renowned for its European cooking, and its patio overlooks the valley. An indoor bar supplements the one outside by the swimming pool.
The lush landscaped grounds extend over 20 acres and are crossed by gravel paths and a babbling stream that originates on nearby Mount Meru and flows through a small dam below the main building.
Facilities include a large swimming pool and a viewing tower facing Mount Kilimanjaro 80 kilometers to the east. The birdlife is excellent, monkeys frequently pass through the gardens, and the lodge can arrange a variety of local trips, as well as the usual safaris to Mount Kilimanjaro and Meru climbs hikes
Comfortable accommodations in Dik dik hotel are in chalets with terracotta tile roofs, stucco walls, light pine furniture, desks, fireplaces, mini-bars, framed local batiks, twin or double beds, and small furnished porches. Baths have tile floors, stall showers, hair dryers and toiletries. Rooms 19 and 20 view a gallery forest frequented by birds and monkeys.
This is a peaceful and attractive set-up, with decent functional accommodations, a lovely setting, quality food, good service and gracious Swiss management. It is not as outdoor-oriented as nearby Ngare Sero but it has a more personal touch than the likes of Mountain Village Lodge hotel and Arusha Hotel, and a 18-year track record makes it a good conservative choice for those seeking city hotel facilities in a distinctly African natural setting.
