Chimpanzee of Gombe National Park: Chimpanzees found at Gombe that were studied by Jane Goodall have been categorized in 3 communities: Kasakela, Mitumba and Kalande. Chimpanzees found in Gombe are smaller in size than those found at Mahale Mountains National Park with adult weight about 35-50 kilograms and females being smaller and weighing less, with a lifespan of 30 to 45 years. Close interaction of Gombe chimps with humans has instilled peculiar behavioral practices such as avoidance and teasing. The chimps of Gombe when aware that they are being watched would turn their back on their onlookers, move away from the regular home range, attempt to climb trees and be illusive about their presence and whereabouts. This was not observed in the chimps at Mahale

Chimpanzee Family and Communities: Chimpanzees like humans care for their young. After an 8-month gestation period, an infant, colored in light pink fur is born and is nurtured to the age of 3 to 4 years. It is quite common to find young chimps being attached to the mother for a third of their life. During your Chimpanzee safari guests are likely to encounter varying sounds made by the chimpanzees from various parts of the forest. Guests and the guides assigned to them will use their hearing senses to track the chimps. The sounds made include hooting, pant-hoot, screeching or howling-barks. The sounds are made when chimps encounter excitement, fear or food. Day 1: Arrival In Tanzania – Mahale Mountains National Park
Upon arrival at the Kilimanjaro International Airport in Tanzania, our transfer service officer will personally meet all arriving guests. We will be standing outside the arrival section holding a signboard with your name on it. We will help you transfer to the local airport, where you will check in for your flight departing to Mahale Mountains National Park.
Arrive early evening at your local park airstrip, where you met by a camp representative and transferred via boat to Nkungwe Luxury Camp. Enjoy the rest of the day sitting by the lake on the white sandy shore sipping a cup of tea while enjoying the spectacular orange sun setting on the horizon while listening to the smooth ripples and waves from the lake’s ebb and flow.
Activities Included: Snorkeling; swimming; relaxation.

Day 2-4: Arrival In Tanzania – Mahale Mountains National Park
After an early morning breakfast, depart for a full day of trekking in Mahale Mountains National Park with the opportunity to view chimpanzees in their natural habitat.Guest visiting Mahale Mountains National Park will have the opportunity to experience the park through sight and sound. Upon sighting a chimp group, guests will have the ability to experience/examine the behavioral characteristics of these highly advanced and sophisticated animals from a distance, which sometimes includes grooming, use of simplified tools, male dominance, and/or mating rituals. Chimpanzees are part of the ape family and share a special genetic relationship with human beings, over 99%, making them the closest relative of modern man.
Just like humans, chimps share common physical and behavioral patterns with men such as have large brain, social characteristics and intelligence. Although Chimpanzee viewing is normally the focus of attention when visiting Mahale Mountains, keen clients will be able to hear the sounds of the insects, butterflies, birds and also other chimpanzees in other parts of the forest. Other mammals noted at Mahale include: giant squirrel, red-legged sun squirrel, brush-tailed porcupine, Angolan black-and-white colobus bushy-tailed mongoose and Sharpe's grysbok.

Return to Nkungwe Luxury Camp at the completion of your trekking experience and relax by the lake. Spend the rest of evening after dinner by the campfire discussing your experiences or just gazing at the stars on a calm and clear African night.
