Rufiji River Camp \ Back to Tanzania Safaris

Rufiji River Camp Hotel is located on the banks of the Rufiji river, in a point where the ample and tranquil river is animated by many and different species of animals. Rufiji River tented camp, situated in the heart of the reserve, is environmentally friendly and each tent is equipped with private bathroom and a veranda facing the river. There is a constant flow of animals coming down to drink at the river offering a permanent show to visitors of the Rufiji River camp. The water is usually full of hundreds of hippos as well as groups of crocodiles that laze in the sun on the sandbanks in the river. A structure in the central part of the camp hosts the restaurant, bar and library, all with a view of the river and the sunset.  Rufiji River Camp is operated by Foxes Safari Camps & Lodge and the camp management very much looking forward to welcoming you at Rufiji

River Camp.
Rufiji River Camp is a tourist class camp in Selous Game Reserve in southern Tanzania. It's situated by the Rufiji River, not very far from the eastern park gate. Rufiji River Camp was built in the mid-1970 and was the first camp in Selous. The setting by the river is good. You have a good view of and across the river, and you have good chances of seeing wildlife around. The Rufiji River Camp has a rustic African feel to it, with thatch roofs, stone floors and the occasional carved piece of furniture. Immaculate and well laid out pathways lead through the camp to 20 ensuite standing tents, shaded by thatch. These tents are spaced along the river in a lush stretch of woodland populated by monkeys and numerous birds – and occasionally visited by more exciting large mammals.

Rufiji River camp has a large central area with wonderful views over the Rufiji River. The lounge and small library, bar and dinning area are all under one high thatch roof with lovely stone floors and comfortable soft furnishings. In front there is an outside area with some simple wooden seating around a campfire. Rufiji River camp has a large central area with wonderful views over the Rufiji River. There are British, European and American sockets for people to use in the lounge area. In front there is an outside area with some simple wooden seating around a campfire.  Set a little further back from the river, near the reception is Rufiji's relatively new shaded swimming pool. There are loungers around the pool for those wishing to relax and sunbath in between safari activities.

Rufiji River Camp Hotel Information
Game drives & boat/walking safaris each evening, during cocktail hour, the next day's program is planned as per each guests preferences and "seasonal" opportunities. The choices normally include:

Game drives by 4WD, accompanied by highly experienced rangers very knowledgeable on the reserve its' inhabitants. Game drives could pass through 3 different environments - from the bush near the camp to the open savannah (similar to the Serengeti) to a zone dominated by Borassus palms, at the foot of the mountains. Each area has its inhabitants: prides of lion, perhaps wild dog, elephant, gazelle, antelope, gnu and hundreds of giraffe. Then there are the enormous baobabs, the different species of acacias and palms, decorating the everchanging landscape, offering shade, refuge and delight.

Boat safaris, with a multitude of destinations, ranging from the main course of the river to its many side canals and lakes. In each season the Rufiji River holds special surprises: in June yellow-billed storks can be found nesting on the main river, in August their chicks are learning to fish and fly on the beaches and islands. From December, as the water level rises, other canals and lakes become accessible, offering new panoramas and experiences.

Walking safaris, perhaps the most exciting of all safaris. Selous Game Reserve is one of the very few parks in Tanzania where you can take a safari "on foot". You can choose an established trail, or one for your special interest, but you are always accompanied by an armed ranger. A real treasure for the true explorer.

Bird-watching Selous Game Reserve is a classic area for bird-watching, from the waterbirds found in the lakes and floodplains that surround the Rufiji River, to the dry-country raptors in the hills to the north. There are no child-minding facilities here; children are the full responsibility of the parents at all times. Though there are no special facilities for children at the camp, there is a lovely pool to keep kids occupied when not out on safari. The camp is quite large, so the staffs here do not have the capacity to help look after children staying at the camp. Parents should also be aware that this camp is not fenced and wildlife can pass through at any time – children should not be left unaccompanied.

For all intents and purposes you should consider yourself out of contact. There is intermittent mobile phone reception at Rufiji, however for the sake of the other guests and to maintain the peace and quiet - use is permitted in the reception area only.
On site first aid can be administered and various medications are kept in the camp. In severe emergencies Rufiji can arrange for clients to be flown out from the nearby airstrip.
Because of the Selous large population of dangerous game and the fact that Rufiji River Camp is unfenced, guests are escorted to their rooms after dark. There are also camp guards on duty 24 hrs a day.

Rufiji River Camps Fly Camp
This Fly Camp is situated about 45 minutes drive from the main Rufiji River Camp on the shore of Lake Mzizimia. The name ‘fly camp’ is derived from the English phrase ‘flies by night’, which refers to anything which is temporary. The purpose of having a fly camp is that it allows the client to spend some time in very close proximity to the bush, in a very personal and private environment. In fact, even while the main camp with its maximum capacity of 40 clients cannot be called large, the fly camp offers maximum exclusivity by accommodating 2 to 10 clients.

Recommended duration of stay: 2 nights or more. Although there is no electricity at the camp, this minor inconvenience is more than made up for by the ‘this is our camp’ feeling. Tents are spacious double occupancy tents (singles can also be arranged), much larger than the average bush tent with the apex of the A-frame at approx. 2 metres. Each one is equipped with folding cot beds, mattresses, sheets, blankets, pillows, towels and soap. In front of the tents there are folding safari style chairs and a table placed on a locally made African mat. At the camp there are 2 ‘long-drop’ style toilets and a separate oil drum bush shower.
