Day 1: Nairobi - Norfolk Hotel
Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, is the largest city in East Africa. It began as a depot of the East African Railroad in 1899, and in little over 90 years has become one of the major cities in modern Africa --and a headquarters of the United Nations.
A vibrant and rapidly expanding city, Nairobi is a mosaic of many races and cultures. Interesting sightseeing opportunities in or around Nairobi include the Karen Blixen Museum, the National Museum and many arts and craft studios and galleries. You will be met by African Safaris and Adventuress at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and transferred to your accommodation check in, rest and relax.
A vehicle and guide will be at your disposal during the afternoon for sightseeing in and around the Nairobi area. We recommend a visit to the National Museum, Karen Blixen's home, the Giraffe Center and there are any number of artist's galleries/studios and other places of interest.
Welcome dinner at the Carnivore Restaurant or other restaurant of your choice
Day 2/3: Amboseli National Park, Tortillis Camp
Depart after breakfast for Amboseli National Park. (approximately 4 hours drive - scheduled air service is optional). Amboseli is justly famous both for its big game -- and for its great scenic beauty.
The glistening, majestic snowcap of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain (19,340') dominates the landscape. The National Park is 1,249 sq. miles of open plains, extensive stands of yellow-barked Acacia woodland, rocky lava-strewn thorn country, swamps and marshes.
This region is undoubtedly a photographer's paradise and one of the best places to view and observe elephant.
Day 4: Lake Manyara National Park, Maji Moto Camp
Depart for Lake Manyara National Park. You will first cross the Kenya/Tanzania border at Namanga, a colorful and active trading outpost.
Once in Tanzania, the peaceful tranquillity of the African countryside prevails as you drive through the region populated by the Arusha people (relatives of the Maasai) until you arrive at the town with their name. Arusha is a small but attractive trading centre and also the business centre for northern Tanzania. It is also a diplomatic centre for East Africa and Great Lakes region, and for the UN (Rwanda tribunal).
About 2 - 2 ½ hours southwest of Arusha is Lake Manyara National Park. Lake Manyara covers an area of only 123 sq. miles, but its diverse terrain supports impressive lists of fauna and avifauna. There are five distinct vegetation zones: ground-water forest with towering fig and mahogany trees; extensive marshlands; redbuds; lawns of open grassland; and woodlands scattered with acacia and baobab.
Manyara is perhaps most famous for its elephant which can be seen at very close quarters, lion, and a wealth of bird life. It is possible to come across leopard in the late evening or early morning. Many thousands of Lesser Flamingo and a sprinkling of the larger variety visit the lake.
Maccoa Ducks and White-backed Ducks are resident, and the beautiful little Pygmy Goose is sometimes observed. Over 30 birds of prey have been recorded.
The Maji Moto Camp is situated towards the southern end of Lake Manyara National Park.
Day 5/6: Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Ngorongoro Serena Lodge
The Ngorongoro Crater is breathtaking -- the largest dry volcanic caldera in the world (12 miles in diameter and 2000 ft. deep). Today you will enjoy the beauty of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the spectacular views from the Crater Rim (and your room!). You will have an opportunity to visit a Maasai enkang (village) to meet and learn about the Maasai who inhabit the Conservation Area
Day 6
You will make the dramatic winding descent down the Lerai escarpment for a full day (with picnic lunch) on the Crater floor, returning late afternoon to the crater rim.
The crater floor is teeming with wildlife including the regal black-maned lion, elephant, rhino, cheetah, eland, wildebeest, common zebra, spotted hyena and, if one is very lucky, leopard
Day 7: Drive to Serengeti National Park, Serengeti Serena Lodge
Descending off the great volcano from Ngorongoro Crater to the Serengeti plains you will have the opportunity to stop at Olduvai Gorge where the Laetoli footprints were discovered.
Early man made an appearance in Olduvai Gorge about two million years ago. Further on, the "Shifting sands" are a most interesting phenomena and worth the side trip. Eventually you will reach the seemingly endless plains of the Serengeti. The great herds of migratory wildebeest will be in the Serengeti at this time.
The Serengeti is Tanzania's most celebrated game reserve encompassing vast savannah, rocky outcrop and riverine forest. This is a land of seemingly endless vistas, and sunsets that you can reach out and touch. Two World Heritage Sites and two Biosphere Reserves have been established within the 30,000 km² region.
It's unique ecosystem has inspired writers from Ernest Hemingway to Peter Mattheissen, filmakers like Hugo von Lawick and Alan Root as well as numerous photographers and scientists
Day 8/9: Serengeti National Park, Kirawira Camp
It is the migration for which Serengeti is perhaps most famous. Over a million wildebeest and about 200,000 zebras flow south from the northern hills to the southern plains for the short rains every October and November, and then swirl west and north after the long rains in April, May and June.
So strong is the instinct to move that no drought, gorge or crocodile infested river can hold them back. You will spend two nights in the western corridor through which this great migration passes en route to the Masai Mara in search of water and pasture.
Day 10: Serengeti - Kilimanjaro to Nairobi
Early breakfast and game drive to Grumeti airstrip for private air charter to Kilimanjaro International Airport to clear Tanzania customs and immigration before continuing to Nairobi.
You will be met at Wilson Airport by African Safaris and Adventures, lunch at the Aeroclub and transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
