Swala Camp \ Back to Tanzania Safaris

Swala camp hotel is a luxury safaro tented camp, located within Tarangire National Park borders. The park is an easy 115 kms from Arusha on an excellent roads and the camp itself is another 67 kms into the park. Tarangire is noted for its elephant population and spectacular baobabs of every shape and color. Nestled in a remote pocket of the Park, Swala camp is situated in a copse of majestic acacia trees at the edge of the Gurusi wetlands and the unfurling savannah beyond. This section of the park is exceptionally private, with no other camps around.

The stands of ancient baobab trees, large family herds of elephants, prolific bird life and dry season concentrations of wildlife make Tarangire the classic Africa of lore – feted by explorers, immortalized in documentaries and sought after by the discerning traveller. This picturesque safari hideaway is exclusive in the southwestern corner of Tarangire National Park, affording guests private game viewing, wilderness luxury, and a privileged glimpse of an Africa, untrammeled by tourism. if you are after some serious luxury in Tarangire Tanzania, this is definitely the place to be. It's a permanent tented camp that spares no expense for the sake of comfort and luxury .It doesn't have the spontaneity of a camp like Oliver's Camp (and if it's the authentic bush camp feel you're after that's where you should go) and feels quite a bit more formal, but service is absolutely without fault and the food is superb.

The safari camp itself also looks a bit bare when you first arrive, but this is probably partly because there's no shortage of game in the area in the dry season. Much of this game can be seen from your tent as there's an artificial water hole to which they pump water, just in front of the camp. Clearly this isn't everyone's cup of tea, but the results are pretty spectacular.
Swala luxury camp offers an experience that is both exclusive in its setting and luxurious in its style, the ambience of old, wild Africa with a breathtaking location that defines the safari as surely as the wildlife that inhabits it.Swala Camp is owned and operated by Sanctuary Lodges.

Swala camp hotel Activities & Wildlife
The Park’s name is derived from the Tarangire River, the park’s only source of permanent water. In the dry season this river is the lifeline, attracting much of the game. Huge herds of elephant, greater kudu, and fringe-ear Oryx are what the park is synonymous with. In addition, leopard and tree-climbing pythons often inhabit the trees.Due to the low volume of traffic in the park, the game is “wild" and, being unaccustomed to vehicles, this offers a truly unique experience. Two game viewing drives daily in open-topped 4WD vehicles are included in the package.Throughout your stay, you will be serenaded by the resident wildlife, including impala (after which the camp is named), waterbuck, lion and various elephant groups. There is even a resident leopard that puts in the occasional guest appearance at the waterhole during dinner.

Swala camp hotel Climate & Clothing
Tanzania has a tropical climate, which is characterized by warm days and cool evenings. There is no winter here and the coolest months are June to September with average day temperatures of 18C-22C and night temperatures of 8C-15C. The hottest months are October to February with temperatures ranging between 22C-30C during the day and 15C-21C at night.
Safari Clothing should be cool, comfortable & casual all year round. Jerseys and heavier jackets are required in early mornings and evenings. Muted colours are the most suitable on safari and white does reflect the light, creating a glare. We advise long sleeves and long trousers due to the long grasses. Sturdy and comfortable shoes are essential. Laundry services are available.

Conservation and Community
As part of their commitment to this forgotten corner of Tanzania, the staff and management team at Swala safari camp have initiated a pioneering community conservation project that has recently led to the building of a school for the children of a village that borders Tarangire Tanzania. Guests at Swala hotel are offered the privileged opportunity to learn more about these projects and become involved as part of their stay.

In addition all the tents are equipped with VHF radios to enable guests to contact the management in the event of an emergency.
