Buhoma Camp Lodge
Self Drive: - It is 108km to the Park Headquarters at Buhoma from Kabale which is 414 km from Kampala. Driving the Kabale-Buhoma road requires at times a 4 Wheel drive vehicle. All junctions on the road from Kabale to Buhoma are well sign posted (Bwindi National Park). The route takes you 17 km from Kabale on the Kisoro road where you must follow the right fork at the junction at the trading centre which takes you down to and across the floating pontoon where a toll of Ush1,000- is payable to Kabale Council at the barrier The route continues to Kanungu.
At the traffic circle turn left direction Kanyantorogo where again turn left at this traffic circle. All directions are sign posted 'Bwindi'. Pass Ntumgarmo Tea Factory and through the village of Butogota. A right turn some 15 km from Bwindi which is well sign posted signals your nearly there. There are 2 additional routes.
Route 2 via Kabale. - At the second junction on the Kisoro road sign posted Bwindi you will arrive at Buhoma via Ruhija. This is the most scenic route. 4 wheel drive is recommended especially during the rain season.
Route 3 via Ntumgamo.- 1 km after Ntumgarmo town turn right sign posted Rukungiri. This is an all weather tarmac road that will eventually be completed through to the Ishasha border post. This is the fatsed route if travelling directly from the east. At Rukungiri follow signs for Kanungu where you will pick up the Kabale-Buhoma route at the traffic circle. This is the fastest route to Bwindi from Kampala since the completion of the Ntumgamo-Rukungiri tarmac road.
By Public Transport: - There is a direct bus between Kampala and Buhoma daily in both directions. Fare is Ushs35, 000-. The bus leaves Kampala at around 06.00am, arriving in Buhoma around 6 pm. The bus leaves Buhoma at 05.00am. The other alternative is the irregular pick-ups and taxis that connect Kabale and Butogota. If there is no transport from Kabale to Butogota, take a Kihihi taxi as far as Kanyantorogo, from where you can pick up the bus as it comes through from Kampala or take a private hire vehicle. Thursday is market day in Butogota when transport to there is more abundant. From Butogota you will have to arrange a taxi/pickup to take you through to Buhoma. The asking price for the vehicle hire is usually around Ushs20,000- although with bargaining people have paid as little as Ushs13,000-. There are always vehicles around for hire. The alternative is to walk the 17 kms.
Getting to Nkuringo - Nkuringo is home to the 4th group of habituated Mountain Gorilla's in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The site is 35 km from Kisoro town and 80 km from Kabale travelling via Rubuguri. The route is signposted off the main Kabale-Kisoro route although the road best travelled is that directly from Kisoro making the total distance 123 km. Driving time from Kabale is 4 hours. Persons tracking at Nkuringo are advised to visit either the Kabale or Kisoro office before proceeding to the Nkuringo reception office.
Hotel Accommodation Buhoma:
Camping facilities, bandas, and a deluxe tented camp are available at Buhoma. There are no camping sites within the National Park at Buhoma. There is a simple campsite and banada accommodation currently at Nkuringo.
Lake Kitandara Tented Camp: Located just outside the park gate at Buhoma. The camp has recently been upgraded in 2006 with each tent supplied with piped hot water, has a flushing toilet, a hand washing and bath tap, bath room mirror, towel rack and solar power. The dinning and reception has also been refurbished
Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge: This is an up market tented camp. The tariffs are on an all-inclusive basis including unlimited consumption of all alcoholic and soft drinks; laundry services; and any activities clients wish to do around the lodge. A complimentary massage is also offered
Engagi Lodge: Newly opened in late 2008 and owned by African Safaris replacing the former tented camp. This 8 cottage up market lodge is located in a wonderful location on the fringes of the forest with views of canopy forest and the Munyaga River.
Gorilla Resort: is the newest luxury camp to appear out of the forest at Buhoma. The camp is composed of a main lodge building with lounge, restaurant, bar, and a suspended deck that features a campfire overlooking the rain forest. The accommodation is provided in large walk-in safari tents with their own en-suite bathrooms with hot and cold water. Each bathroom is fitted with a Victorian Ball and Claw-foot brass bathtub. There are also cottages which include similar facilities to the tents. Both tents and cottages command spectacular panoramic views of the forest.
Silverback Lodge: Up market 14 bed, 7 cottage lodge.This small and cozy venue built from natural materials and opened in 2008 is perched on high, atop the valley overlooking the forest.
Buhoma Lodge Hotel commands spectacular and uninterrupted views of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park home to the rare and elusive Mountain Gorilla. Buhoma Lodge Hotel has been completely renovated; the original Buhoma Homestead and now offer a top quality, intimate lodge Hotel for our guests’ enjoyment. Situated within the National Park, less than five minutes walk, from the start of the gorilla trekking point.Eight, comfortable cottages have been carefully built, each with its own private verandah, allowing wonderful views of the forest canopy of the National Park. Inside the specious cottages you will find comfortable beds, a well appointed en suite bathroom with flushing toilet and a hot shower and also some rooms with bath tubs. An elevated lounge area, complete with bar and dining facilities, offers a cosy, comfortable environment, to discuss the day’s activities around the fireplaces which add atmosphere and warmth in the cool evenings.
As part of our commitment as an organization with a responsible tourism policy we have designed Buhoma Lodge Hotel using sustainable local materials where possible, with the emphasis being on natural products, which has, in turn, given support to the local communities and businesses. Supplies are obtained, as far as possible from local sources and staff are also generally recruited locally and trained on site. Our water supply is gravity fed and solar power is used for lighting with power points limited to a central area allocated for recharging cameras and videos.
Meals are freshly prepared with many local ingredients, offering a balance of international and locally flavored cuisine with most meals being of several courses.
Our bar has a selection of local and imported beverages and our friendly local staff will attend to your needs. Hot beverages are available throughout the day on a self service basis, but, are delivered to your cottage with early morning wake up calls as required, allowing you to savour the early morning sounds of the forest awakening.
Bwindi Volcanoes Lodge - Volcanoes Lodge at Bwindi is on the edge of Buhoma village alongside Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in the far west of Uganda. The lodge is set on a hillside above a river, overlooking lush rainforest opposite. It is the perfect base for visits to the national park and as a starting point for gorilla tracking. The lodge’s accommodation is in eight large beautifully constructed thatched cottages with en-suite facilities. The ‘bucket’ shower and ‘long-drop’ toilet are practical and similar to those found in remote safari camps. Each of the cottages has its own verandah which, like the bar and dining room, looks across to the forested hillside on the opposite bank.
Gorilla Forest Camp - This luxury camp set on a steep hillside (this means lots of steps!) just inside Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It is built into the thick secondary rainforest and, since it is close to the Park entrance and briefing point, is the perfect starting point to track gorillas.The camp’s accommodation is in eight large tents, with en-suite facilities and a separate bathroom with the amazing experience of a bathtub looking out into the rain forest. The tents are exceptionally spacious made even more so by a large wooden deck where guests can relax or experience private dining. There is also a large dining area and bar.
Buhoma Community Rest Camp (BCRC) is the backbone of Buhoma Community Development Association. BCRC has been the main source of funding to the Association activities since it's inception in 1993 (alongside BCDA).BCRC was setup at the Edge of Bwindi impenetrable National Park with the main aim of providing quality Lodging service to tourists and visitors.
