Bwindi Safari - 8 days

Bwindi gorilla tracking safari started in April 1993 and is a very captivating activity which involves trekking in the wilderness as well as hiking along the hills of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in search of these primate Apes. Gorilla tracking safaris are done in Uganda and Rwanda by African safaris and Adventures. The Gorilla tracking experience starts at eight in the morning and occasionally lasts the whole day. The park management organizes a briefing about the general conduct or behavior of trackers when visiting the Gorillas. Currently, there are four habituated groups in Bwindi.

Ranger guides lead the visitors to the forest traps in search of these creatures. The Gorilla trackers follow the flattened foliage and piles of dung and sometimes the previous night’s nest to get the sense of direction in which the Gorillas headed. This involves passing through giant thickets of bamboo, dense vegetation in view of monkeys jumping from branch to branch, chimpanzees in search for food and edible plants. The trackers hack through the under growth with machetes in a bid to make bearable paths for visitors.

The Gorilla tracking activity can last for a couple of hours or minutes depending on the movement of the Gorillas the previous day. On discovering Gorillas, visitors are urged to keep a distance of five meters and not to use flash while taking photos. Gorilla tracking safari in bwindi Impenetrable National Park which is an exceptionally rich and varied ecosystem. It is one of the most unique and important forests in Africa. The park ranges from lowland to afro-montane forest, a moist tropical forest that is unique in Uganda and rare among East African protected areas. It is one of the richest forests in East Africa for birds (350 species), butterflies (310 species) and trees (324 species). Bwindi also has at least 120 species of mammals including 10 species of primates. This area is also known as the Albertine rift and Bwindi has 23 birds endemic to the Albertine Rift and 10 trees endemic to Uganda.

The park has two dry seasons i.e. December-January and June-August. The wettest months are March-April and September –November. Rainfall ranges from 1130-2390 mm per year. Bwindi is one of the most biologically diverse areas on earth. Its unique, precious flora sustains roughly half of the world's population of mountain gorillas - believed to number just 600. There's also a substantial chimpanzee population and Bwindi is the only forest in Africa in which these two apes live together. Apart from gorilla tracking, there are a number of other hikes and trails within the park. As you travel along, accompanied by an experienced tour guide, you will learn about the animals, birds, butterflies, trees and plants in the forest. This is a great way to pass the time while you wait for your pre-arranged date with a gorilla. Bwindi safari will take you to see the gorillas in a beautiful location. There are three groups of habituated gorillas in Bwindi that can be visited on a gorilla track
