Tembo House Hotel is a unique and fascinating Hotel located at the heart of Zanzibar Island Stone Town, surrounded by historical buildings and the sea front looking out to the islands and the harbour. The 19th Century restored Hotel Tembo House is the sister Hotel of Dhow Palace, (located just 300 metres up the road) and is a landmark amongst other hotels in Zanzibar, having served many purposes over the years from being the American Consulate in 1834, to becoming the premises of Cowasjee Dinshaw and Partners in 1884 which was the famous Trading Companies in the western Indian Ocean.  Today Tembo House Hotel is locally owned and managed, being one of the first to start up after Zanzibar open its doors to tourism in the late 1980's, giving them a perfect location for their guests to explore the city of Stone Town. The original building really was a magnificent structure and many of the original features remain today, such as an array of antique furniture, fittings and ornaments from all over the world and the most notable amongst all of them, is the superb stained glass salon overlooking over the bay that is one of the architectural highlights of Stone Town.

The Tembo has many Interesting historical neighbours just next door is the former British Consulate where Dr. Livingstone's body was brought in 1874 during the epic journey from deapest Africa back to England. In 1930 Mahatma Gandhi left South Africa 1930 and came to Zanzibar and stay in this Building with Cowajee Dinshaw Brother for few weeks. As it could be seen, it is only a half kilometer from the harbor and is 10 to 15 minutes driving from the Airport. Tembo House Hotel has long beach on the front where many like to make use of for swimming or sunbathing. The clean refreshing water of the swimming pool will cool you up after a long sunny day. Tembo House Hotel offers their guests accommodation in 34 spacious rooms decorated with Oriental and traditional Zanzibarian ornaments, antiques and furniture. Many of the rooms have balconies overlooking the beach or the swimming pool courtyard.

All rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable and are equipped with mosquito nets, ceiling fans, air conditioning, telephone, hairdryers, mini-bar, multi-channel television and en suite bathroom with hot and cold showers. Meals at Tembo House Hotel are served at the Bahari Restaurant and lounge area, which is adjacent to the beach and provides the ideal place for lunches with views over the azure waters of the Indian Ocean and cooling sea breezes.

The Bahari Restaurant features excellent local and international cuisine giving you the tastes of the spice coast of Zanzibar where you can have your own private traditional meal served on the terrace over looking the sea.

As with Dhow Palace, Tembo House Hotel follow the Muslim code of not serving alcohol. This is unfortunate but something that we have to respect according to their beliefs. There are however, plenty of good restaurants and pubs within walking distance which do serve alcohol.
